South Africa Urges ICJ for Gaza Ceasefire

South Africa has raised concerns over the escalating violence in Gaza, accusing Israel of committing acts that it describes as 'genocide.' The country has called upon the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to step in and put an end to Israel's assault on Rafah. The hearings at the Peace Palace in The Hague have commenced, with South Africa demanding a ceasefire across Gaza, awaiting Israel's response.

Israel, on the other hand, has defended its actions, asserting its adherence to international law and refuting South Africa's allegations as unfounded and morally wrong. While the ICJ had previously instructed Israel to prevent genocidal activities and facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza, it refrained from mandating a ceasefire.

South Africa's plea for urgent ICJ intervention is driven by the dire situation in Rafah, emphasizing the need for three emergency measures: the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Rafah, unrestricted access for humanitarian workers and journalists to Gaza, and a detailed compliance report from Israel.

Enforcing ICJ rulings, though legally binding, presents challenges, as evidenced by past instances such as Russia's actions in Ukraine. South Africa underscores the necessity of a lasting ceasefire in Gaza to ensure the effective implementation of existing court directives.

Israel's military campaign in Rafah, spearheaded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, has resulted in widespread civilian displacement and casualties. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has reported a mass exodus from Rafah due to intense combat and Israeli airstrikes.

South Africa has cautioned that the potential fall of Rafah would have grave repercussions for Gaza, given its vital role as a humanitarian center relatively untouched by Israeli assaults. The country stresses the urgency of halting hostilities and safeguarding the civilian population in Gaza.
