Chaman Protests Escalate, Authorities Take Action

The town of Chaman, located on the border, is currently experiencing a tense situation as violent protests and clashes between demonstrators and security forces have intensified over the past three days. The unrest has resulted in injuries to 20 individuals, including eight security personnel. Authorities have taken action by arresting 45 people who are believed to have caused damage to public and private property and attacked security officials during the protests.

One of the consequences of the ongoing violence is the suspension of the passenger train service between Quetta and Chaman due to the attacks on government buildings. Initially, protesters were confined to a specific area for their sit-in, but they later dispersed armed with sticks and stones, causing disruptions throughout the town.

The root cause of these demonstrations lies in the government's recent decision to restrict border crossings to individuals holding valid passports and visas, rather than allowing entry based on identity cards. This policy change has sparked prolonged protests, leading to the closure of businesses, government offices, and banks in the region.

Security forces, including Levies, police, and Frontier Corps, have been deployed to manage the situation, resorting to tear gas shelling to disperse the protesters. Despite attempts to engage with tribal elders and stakeholders, the protests have persisted, with demands for the release of arrested leaders and individuals.

The local administration has issued a warning against blocking the Quetta-Chaman highway, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order in the area. A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mir Safraz Bugti highlighted the significance of upholding the state's authority while expressing readiness to engage in dialogue to address the protesters' grievances.

Political parties have also expressed solidarity with the Chaman protesters, advocating for the acceptance of their demands. Calls have been made in the National Assembly for the formation of a parliamentary committee to address the situation, stressing the necessity of peaceful dialogue.

Furthermore, the Foreign Office has emphasized the regulation of border movement between Pakistan and Afghanistan, requiring individuals to possess valid visas and passports for entry. This measure aims to ensure orderly border crossings and enhance security.
