The surge in oral cancer cases in Thatta district, attributed to banned chewing substances like Gutka, Mawa, and Main Puri, underscores the urgent need for intervention and strict regulations to safeguard public health.

In Thatta district, a concerning increase in cases of oral cancer has been noted, primarily associated with the consumption of harmful chewing substances like Gutka, Mawa, and Main Puri. Health experts have identified these banned products as the leading cause behind the surge in oral cancer patients. Over the past five years, the district has witnessed a significant rise, with a total of 210 individuals diagnosed with oral cancer.

Dr. Sham Lal, the head of the Dental Department at Civil Hospital Thatta, revealed distressing statistics, indicating that out of the total patients, 165 are in the early stages of cancer, while 50 have progressed to the advanced stage, enduring severe pain and distress.

Dr. Lal stressed the urgent need for immediate action to combat this worrying trend. He highlighted the harmful effects of Gutka and similar substances on oral health, underscoring the critical importance of taking swift measures to restrict the sale and consumption of these dangerous products. According to Dr. Lal, the high prevalence of mouth cancer cases in Thatta district directly correlates with the widespread use of Gutka, Mawa, and Main Puri. He urged authorities to implement rapid interventions to eradicate these harmful substances from the market.

The escalating cases of oral cancer in Thatta district serve as a stark reminder of the detrimental impact of consuming banned chewing substances. It is imperative for both the government and individuals to prioritize public health by enforcing strict regulations against the sale and usage of Gutka, Mawa, and Main Puri. By raising awareness about the risks associated with these products and promoting healthier alternatives, we can work towards reducing the incidence of oral cancer and safeguarding the well-being of the community.
