Provincial Energy Minister raises concerns over KE overbilling government institutions, plans to combat overbilling through smart meters and promote local solar panel production.

During a recent meeting, Provincial Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah raised concerns about K-Electric (KE) allegedly overbilling government institutions by Rs20 billion in the last decade. An audit this year revealed an additional overbilling of more than Rs2 billion by KE. Despite the provision of smart meters to prevent such practices, KE has failed to install them, causing worries about the impact on citizens.

Minister Shah pointed out that state-run power companies like Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) and Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) have successfully implemented smart meters, ensuring transparency in data and payments. To combat overbilling, the government plans to establish a joint committee to protect citizens from such occurrences.

In a bid to shield Karachi residents from alleged exploitation by KE, the Sindh government is focusing on promoting local production of solar panels. This initiative aims to reduce foreign exchange expenditure and create job opportunities. Additionally, the government plans to provide special incentives to foreign investors interested in setting up solar panel manufacturing units in the province.

The government's efforts to address overbilling issues and promote renewable energy sources like solar power demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding citizens' interests and fostering sustainable development. By encouraging local production and attracting foreign investment in solar energy, the authorities aim to not only tackle immediate challenges but also pave the way for a more environmentally friendly and economically viable future.
