Khalid Hussain Bhath, central chairman of the Farmers’ Union, raises concerns over Punjab's wheat procurement issue, highlighting challenges faced by farmers and the impending protest sit-in to demand government action.

In a recent development, Khalid Hussain Bhath, the central chairman of the Farmers’ Union, has raised concerns over the wheat procurement issue in Punjab. Bhath emphasized that the Punjab government's failure to procure wheat is at the core of the problem, stating that the additional 400,000 metric tons of wheat ordered by the federal government will not suffice due to an existing surplus of 4 to 5 million metric tons.

Bhath announced plans for a protest sit-in scheduled in front of the Punjab Assembly on April 29 to draw attention to the pressing matter. He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers, pointing out discrepancies in wheat procurement across different regions where the Pasco center is not operational.

Expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister's initiative to purchase more wheat, Bhath stressed that it falls short of addressing the farmers' needs. He underscored the plight of farmers who are unable to set prices for their produce, facing exorbitant rates imposed by the fertilizer mafia and escalating electricity bills.

Amidst the looming threat of wheat spoilage during the rainy season, Bhath lamented the lack of dialogue between farmers and the government, accusing the authorities of neglecting their concerns. He highlighted the vital role of farmers in ensuring the country's food security and reiterated the farmers' determination to stage a protest sit-in on April 29 to demand action from the government.
