The 'Humqadam' app in Pakistan aims to combat gender-based violence by connecting survivors with essential services and raising awareness.

A new mobile application called 'Humqadam' has been introduced to aid women facing physical and emotional violence in Pakistan. Developed by Shirkat Gah-Women’s Resource Centre in collaboration with the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) and technical support from LUMS University, the app aims to connect survivors with essential services.

The launch event of the app received praise from various dignitaries, including NCSW Chair Nilofar Bakhtiar and government officials, who highlighted the critical need for such a tool in light of inadequate law enforcement and cultural norms perpetuating violence against women.

Humqadam provides information on national and provincial resources and services in 16 districts, addressing the prevalent issue of gender-based violence in the country. The NCSW emphasized the significance of prioritizing policies related to women, particularly in combating gender-based violence.

Former MNA Mehnaz Akbar Aziz stressed the importance of raising awareness about the app among different groups, such as universities, women lawyers, and influencers. The presentation by the organization's coordinator and LUMS representative detailed the app's development process and its goal of creating awareness at all societal levels.

UN Women’s Portfolio Manager highlighted the challenges faced due to decreasing funding for gender equality initiatives, citing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. MNAs and government officials acknowledged the app's comprehensive referral system and the crucial role of credible data in policymaking.

The app was commended by officials from various provinces for its potential in raising awareness, providing support to survivors, and combating the stigma around gender-based violence. The integrated platform was praised for its ability to offer timely information to survivors.

In a separate announcement, the advisor to the Chief Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) revealed the establishment of a dedicated helpline to combat domestic violence, aiming to offer essential support to women facing abuse.

The launch of the 'Humqadam' app marks a significant step towards addressing gender-based violence in Pakistan. With the support of key stakeholders and the commitment to raising awareness and providing crucial services, the app is poised to make a positive impact in the fight against violence targeting women.
