The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) halts protests in AJK after government acceptance of demands. Relief measures include a Rs23 billion subsidy package to address inflation and high taxes.

The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has decided to halt protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after the government, under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accepted their demands for relief measures. The government has committed to a subsidy package of Rs23 billion to tackle issues like inflation, high taxes, and electricity bills in AJK.

The JAAC representative confirmed that all protester demands were met, leading to the cessation of the protests. The government's actions include reducing wheat prices by Rs1,100 per 40kg and providing electricity at production cost. Despite ending the protests, a state-wide shutdown will be observed until 3pm to honor those who lost their lives during the demonstrations.

In response to the protesters' requests, the government has set up a judicial commission to investigate the privileges of the ruling elite. Additionally, all individuals detained during the protests will be released, and charges against demonstrators will be dropped.

JAAC leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir expressed appreciation to PM Shehbaz for addressing their demands, which mainly focused on affordable flour, electricity, and the elimination of elite privileges. Mir emphasized the significance of these concessions and expressed regret over the disruption caused by the suspension of internet services during the protests.

Earlier, the JAAC declared a 'black day' to honor those who lost their lives during clashes with law enforcement. Despite continued demonstrations for four days, the protests ceased following the announcement of the subsidy package by PM Shehbaz.

After negotiations between the AJK government and the JAAC, a Rs23 billion subsidy package was unveiled to alleviate the unrest in the region. AJK PM Chaudhry Anwarul Haq assured the public that the subsidies for power and food commodities would be swiftly implemented to restore peace in the area.

The subsidy package entails a reduction in flour prices from Rs3,100 to Rs2,000 per 40kg. Moreover, electricity rates have been adjusted to Rs3 per unit for consumption up to 100 units, Rs5 per unit for 100-300 units, and Rs6 per unit for usage exceeding 300 units. Commercial electricity rates have also been revised to Rs10 per unit for 1-300 units and Rs15 per unit for consumption above 300 units.

The resolution of the protests in AJK marks a significant step towards addressing the grievances of the people. The government's commitment to providing relief measures and investigating elite privileges demonstrates a willingness to listen to the concerns of the public and work towards a more equitable society.
