Sindh Government Introduces Random Drug Tests for Students

Random drug tests of students are being considered by the Sindh government as a measure to combat drug peddlers operating on educational campuses. This initiative comes in response to the alarming rise in drug-related incidents among young individuals, particularly students. Sindh Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has stressed the importance of safeguarding the youth from the dangers of narcotics.

The proposed plan involves conducting random drug screenings in educational institutions, with strict confidentiality measures in place for students who test positive. Stringent actions will be taken against those found involved in the distribution of drugs. The government's anti-narcotics efforts will be reinforced through collaborations with law enforcement agencies such as the Rangers and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF). Additionally, new rehabilitation centers are set to be established to aid individuals struggling with substance abuse.

Highlighting the threat posed by meth ice (methamphetamine) to young minds, authorities have urged parents to closely monitor their children and called upon the media to raise awareness, particularly regarding the dangers of this drug. Recent operations have resulted in the arrest of 1,550 suspects involved in drug trafficking, leading to the seizure of 236kg of meth ice and other illicit substances.

However, challenges such as staffing shortages in the Narcotics Control Department and delays in the registration process for vehicles have been identified. The Excise and Taxation Department has issued registration plates for 44,000 vehicles awaiting collection by their owners, who are advised to retrieve them promptly to avoid penalties. Effective May 10, stringent actions will be taken against unregistered vehicles, with no exceptions for VIPs, as all unauthorized vehicles will be impounded.
