The LCMA demolition squad in Kashmir's greenbelt area faces challenges due to lack of police support, struggling with illegal constructions and planning extensive drives to combat unauthorized structures.

Demolition drives within the greenbelt area of Kashmir are facing significant challenges due to a lack of support from allied departments, particularly the police. The LCMA demolition squad, comprising only 10 members, is struggling to combat illegal constructions in the region. Abdul Rashid, the In-Charge of demolitions, highlighted the difficulties faced by the team, citing a lack of manpower and support from law enforcement agencies.

Despite conducting recent drives in the Shalimar area to dismantle illegal structures, including fences and tin sheds, the team continues to face resistance and hostility. Zahid Hassan Samoon, the Deputy Superintendent of the Enforcement wing, emphasized the need for police backup during these operations, which are essential to curb unlawful constructions.

Samoon expressed concerns over the challenges posed by small enterprises operating on government property without proper authorization, leading to frequent demolitions. He stressed the importance of public awareness to prevent encroachments in designated areas.

Looking ahead, the LCMA Enforcement wing plans to conduct an extensive demolition drive in the Shalimar area, targeting all illegal structures. Despite weather constraints, the team remains committed to addressing the issue of unauthorized constructions in the region.

The ongoing struggles faced by the LCMA demolition squad underscore the urgent need for enhanced support from allied departments, especially the police, to effectively tackle illegal constructions within the greenbelt area. Public awareness and cooperation are crucial in preserving the integrity of designated lands and preventing encroachments that threaten the environment and community welfare.
