LHC Urges Punjab Govt for Timely Judicial Appointments

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has given the Punjab government a final opportunity to appoint judges to special courts. This decision came during a hearing of a petition filed by the provincial government, seeking the transfer of certain cases from Anti-Terrorism Court-1 Rawalpindi to another court. The LHC Chief Justice stressed the need to expedite the appointment process, highlighting that the matter should have been resolved promptly.

During the hearing, the Advocate General Punjab informed the court that the cabinet committee responsible for finalizing the judges' appointments had consulted with the chief minister. The chief minister had requested prioritization of the issue in the upcoming cabinet meeting. However, the Chief Justice suggested that a special meeting or circulation could have been utilized for a quicker resolution.

Expressing concern over the delay, the Chief Justice inquired about the date of the next cabinet meeting. The Advocate General assured the court that a meeting would be held on Friday to address the matter. Additionally, the Chief Justice pointed out the absence of government committee members during the proceedings, leading the Advocate General to offer their immediate presence upon court order.

Furthermore, the Advocate General confirmed that the government had no objections to the judges' names recommended by the LHC for appointment. Consequently, the court has granted the government a final chance to complete the appointment process promptly.
