Akhunzada Chattan, a PPP leader, narrowly escapes an assassination attempt in Bajaur district. ECP postpones elections due to violence, highlighting safety concerns in Pakistani elections.

On a tense day in Mamund tehsil of Bajaur district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a blast narrowly missed Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Akhunzada Chattan. The explosion targeted Chattan's vehicle but, fortunately, he was unharmed as he was inside a bomb-proof vehicle at the time.

Chattan, who is contesting as the PPP's candidate for NA-8 in the upcoming by-elections on April 21, was the intended victim of the incident. This attack comes in the wake of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponing elections in Bajaur's NA-8 and PK-22 following the tragic killing of Rehan Zeb Khan, an independent candidate supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Khan lost his life during his election campaign when unidentified assailants opened fire on his vehicle in the Siddiqabad area of Bajaur. The attack resulted in Khan's death and injuries to four others. In response to this violence, the ECP issued a notification to delay the polls for NA-8 and PK-22, prioritizing the safety and security of candidates and voters.

These incidents highlight the volatile nature of the political landscape in certain regions of Pakistan, where electoral campaigns are marred by violence and threats. The safety of candidates and the integrity of the electoral process must be safeguarded to ensure a fair and democratic election.
