Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, expressed gratitude to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the UAE for hosting the 14th Session of the IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi. Ambassador Tirmizi commended IRENA's Director General, Francesco La Camera, for his leadership in promoting a cleaner and greener future.

During his address, Ambassador Tirmizi emphasized the urgent need to address climate change, citing its severe impacts on human health and the global economy. He highlighted Pakistan's vulnerability to climate change, particularly in the aftermath of devastating events like the super floods of 2022, which resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of millions, and substantial economic costs.

Despite Pakistan's relatively low contribution to global emissions, Ambassador Tirmizi stressed the importance of climate finance commitments to support developing countries in implementing climate change actions. He praised the outcomes of COP28, hosted by the UAE, which led to crucial decisions such as the establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund.

Ambassador Tirmizi outlined Pakistan's goal to increase the share of clean renewables, including hydropower, to 60% by 2030. This ambitious target aims to enhance energy equity, affordability, and sustainability while significantly reducing emissions from the power sector.

In conclusion, Pakistan's participation in the IRENA Assembly underscores its commitment to addressing climate change challenges and transitioning towards a more sustainable energy future.
