PDMA issues high alert for Punjab monsoon forecast

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert to the administration of Punjab in light of an expected 35 percent rise in monsoon rainfall this year. The PDMA's forecast for July indicates varying levels of precipitation, with the first week expecting 15 to 50 millimeters of rain, followed by 25 to 35 millimeters in the second week, 15 to 25 millimeters in the third week for Upper and South Punjab, and up to 70 millimeters in the final week of the month. The PDMA has specifically highlighted the risk of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in Upper, Central, and South Punjab, which could lead to urban flooding and flash flooding in hill torrents in South Punjab.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has promptly informed all relevant departments about the impending weather conditions. District administrations have been directed to implement safety protocols, including the immediate cleaning of rivers and drainage systems to mitigate potential flood risks. PDMA Director-General Irfan Ali Kathia stressed the significance of collaborative efforts and early preparedness to reduce the impact of natural disasters, urging the public to take necessary precautions during the monsoon season.
