The scorching heatwave in Karachi has claimed 49 lives, with hospitals overwhelmed by heat-related cases. Karachi experiences its hottest night on record, emphasizing the need for heatwave precautions and community support.

The scorching heatwave in Karachi has taken a toll on the city, with the death toll rising to 49 since June 21, as confirmed by Sindh’s health department. Over the last day alone, 144 individuals sought medical assistance for heatstroke symptoms, with 34 requiring hospitalization and 136 being discharged after recovery.

The recent fatalities, totaling four, occurred at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, which has recorded the highest number of heat-related deaths at 23. Civil Hospital follows with 18 deaths, Qatar Hospital with three, and Jinnah Hospital with five casualties due to the relentless heatwave.

July witnessed Karachi's hottest night on record, attributed to the extreme heat and high humidity, as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The city's minimum nighttime temperature soared to 32 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous July record of 31 degrees Celsius. Typically, July sees an average temperature of 27.9 degrees Celsius, making the recent nighttime temperature a significant 4.1 degrees Celsius above normal.

The escalating heatwave in Karachi has not only led to a surge in heat-related illnesses but has also claimed numerous lives. It is crucial for residents to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure, to mitigate the impact of the ongoing heatwave.
