Jammu Schools Declare Early Summer Vacation Due to Heatwave

The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has announced an early start to summer vacations in response to the scorching heatwave gripping the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating that the prevailing intense heatwave is expected to persist for the next week in Jammu, with temperatures consistently exceeding 40 degrees Celsius since mid-May.

Efforts are underway to provide relief to the public amidst the extreme weather conditions. The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has initiated measures such as deploying water-sprinkling vehicles on roads, while religious institutions are offering respite by sprinkling water on devotees. Residents are seeking relief by visiting water bodies or escaping to nearby hill stations.

The soaring temperatures have set new records in various parts of the region, with Katra and Kathua experiencing their hottest days of the season, recording temperatures of 39.4 and 47.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. Similar conditions prevail in Srinagar and surrounding areas, where temperatures are significantly above normal levels.

Authorities have issued guidelines for residents to stay safe during the heatwave, advising against outdoor activities between 12 to 3 pm, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated, wearing light-colored clothing, and seeking shade. Special attention is urged for infants and the elderly, who are encouraged to remain indoors and avoid strenuous activities.

The heatwave has resulted in power and water shortages in many parts of Jammu, with rural areas experiencing drying up of drinking water sources and declining groundwater levels. To address public grievances, dedicated control rooms have been established in each district.

In light of the extreme weather conditions, the Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has declared summer vacation for all schools in the region, effective from June 1 to July 16. Teachers will be available for online guidance during this period, and strict actions will be taken against any school failing to comply with the vacation schedule.
