Pakistani peacekeepers in South Sudan praised for protecting Bentiu residents from floods and awarded for outstanding performance in critical engineering projects.

Pakistani peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been commended for their exceptional efforts in protecting the residents of Bentiu, the capital of Unity state in South Sudan, from devastating floods. Around 300,000 residents were safeguarded thanks to the diligent work of 272 Pakistani Blue-Helmets who constructed and maintained dikes, preventing 5,600 square kilometers of floodwaters from submerging the Bentiu Internally Displaced Person camp and its surroundings.

As their mission comes to a close, the Pakistani unit received recognition for their outstanding performance. 23 blue helmets were awarded the prestigious Force Commander Commendation Card by UNMISS Force Commander, Lieutenant-General Mohan Subramanian. He lauded the Pakistani peacekeepers for their unwavering dedication and significant contributions in executing critical engineering projects efficiently and within deadlines, despite facing various challenges.

The Pakistani peacekeepers, amidst adversities like climate-related disasters and conflicts, demonstrated unwavering commitment. Their efforts not only brought hope and normalcy to the residents of Bentiu but also highlighted the vital role of UN peacekeeping missions in addressing emergencies. As the Pakistani unit prepares to hand over responsibilities to the incoming contingent of Pakistani Army engineers, they leave behind a legacy of safety and resilience in Bentiu.
