Defence Minister Khawaja Asif refutes rumors of a proposed tax on solar panels, emphasizing the government's commitment to sustainable energy practices and the ongoing review of the net metering regime to protect consumers.

Recent rumors circulating on social media about the government considering imposing a tax on solar panels have been debunked by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. The reports suggested that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CCPA-G) was proposing a tax of Rs2,000 per kilowatt on residential and commercial solar panel users. Minister Asif clarified that neither the CCPA-G nor the Power Division has initiated any such proposal. He emphasized that only the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has the authority to impose taxes, not the CCPA-G.

Furthermore, Minister Asif highlighted the ongoing review of the net metering regime to prevent undue financial strain on non-participant poorer families. Approximately 1.75 lakh existing net-metered consumers are being safeguarded from additional burdens, which currently amount to Rs 110 billion annually for the remaining 25 million non-net-metered consumers. Asif urged social media users to verify information before sharing it, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in public discourse.

The cost of solar systems, ranging from 7 to 15 kilowatts, has notably decreased in local markets, making solar energy more accessible to consumers. Minister Asif's statement serves to dispel misinformation and reassure the public about the government's commitment to sustainable energy practices.
