Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho recently spoke at the Sindh Assembly, shedding light on the difficulties faced in attracting expert doctors to government medical facilities. One major obstacle highlighted was the higher salaries offered by private hospitals, leading to a shortage of skilled physicians in public healthcare centers.

Dr. Pechuho emphasized the existing system where doctors are required to pass a public commission exam to qualify for government positions, often pushing them towards private hospitals. To tackle this issue, the government is reintroducing biometric attendance for doctors in public hospitals to ensure accountability and improve service delivery.

The minister also stressed the importance of having competent doctors in government hospitals and announced plans to construct 1000 houses for flood-affected lady health workers, with support from China. Additionally, efforts are underway to address the issue of polio vaccination refusal among parents, especially in Karachi, and combat gastro diseases caused by contaminated water by testing water samples and providing clean water from the River Indus.

On the front of HIV awareness programs, the government is actively engaged in efforts to eradicate the disease. Dr. Pechuho also mentioned the regularization of doctors appointed during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the government's ongoing healthcare initiatives.
