The government has announced a rise in electricity tariffs to cover expenses, with adjustments crucial for the smooth operation and sustainability of the power sector. Nepra approved the increase, reflecting efforts to maintain a stable energy sector.

In a recent announcement, the government has revealed a rise in electricity tariffs by Rs1.47 per unit. This adjustment is set to take place over the months of August, September, and October. The decision comes as electricity companies have requested additional funds to cover various expenses for the upcoming quarter.

Electricity providers have put forth a breakdown of their financial requirements, seeking Rs31.34 billion for capacity charges, Rs5.57 billion for operation and maintenance costs, and Rs12.38 billion for transmission and distribution impacts. These adjustments are crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of the power sector in the coming months.

Earlier, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) conducted a hearing to review the companies' proposals. Following the evaluation, Nepra approved an increase of Rs1.45 per unit in electricity prices, aligning with the Power Division's request.

The rise in electricity tariffs for the third quarter of 2023-2024 reflects the ongoing efforts to maintain a stable and sustainable energy sector. While these adjustments may lead to higher costs for consumers, they are essential for supporting the infrastructure and operations of electricity providers. It is important for all stakeholders to work together towards ensuring a reliable and efficient power supply for the nation.
