The Islamabad High Court uncovered an illegal surveillance system, raising privacy concerns and highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in surveillance practices.

Last month, the Islamabad High Court made a startling discovery during court hearings related to the case of Bushra Bibi. It was revealed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had directed telecom operators to finance, import, and establish a system enabling mass surveillance of citizens' data.

The system currently in operation, known as the Lawful Intercept Management System (LIMS), allows access to private messages, video/audio content, call records, and web browsing histories. Justice Babar Sattar of the IHC emphasized that specific agencies are utilizing LIMS for surveillance purposes.

The illegal surveillance of citizens' data raises serious concerns about privacy and data protection. The revelation of such a system being actively used highlights the need for transparency and accountability in surveillance practices. Citizens have the right to privacy and should be protected from unwarranted intrusion into their personal information.

As the details of this illegal surveillance come to light, it is crucial for authorities to address the issue promptly and ensure that citizens' rights are safeguarded. Transparency and oversight mechanisms must be put in place to prevent such abuses of power in the future. It is essential for the government to prioritize the protection of citizens' privacy and uphold the rule of law.
