Pakistan Bans Deadly Kite Flying Twine

Kite flying, once a cherished tradition marking the arrival of spring in Pakistan, has sadly transformed into a dangerous activity claiming lives due to the use of lethal foreign twine. Known as Patang Bazi, this sport was once a vibrant celebration with families reuniting, music, dance, and traditional food. However, the introduction of multi-layered heavy string coated in synthetic materials has turned kite flying into a perilous pursuit.

The month of February traditionally heralds the kite-flying season, with cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, and Kasur being hubs of this activity. The skies would come alive with colorful kites battling it out, accompanied by music and cheers. The mastery of handling kites in the sky was a skill passed down through generations, creating a community of kite flyers.

Unfortunately, the use of foreign twine, designed for high-velocity winds in other countries, led to tragic consequences in Pakistan. Fatalities due to the sharpness of the twine increased, prompting the government to impose a ban on kite flying in 2009. Despite efforts to curb illegal kite flying, incidents of deaths and injuries persist, highlighting the need for stricter regulations.

Historians and kite enthusiasts advocate for preserving this cultural identity while ensuring safety measures are in place. Suggestions include restricting the sale of specific twine types and designating open spaces for kite flying festivities. The call is to revive the spirit of kite flying as a joyous tradition while safeguarding lives from the dangers posed by modern materials.
