Pakistan urged to embrace agricultural innovation for food security

Pakistan, known for its strong agricultural presence in regions like KP, Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab, has historically relied on agriculture as the primary occupation. However, outdated farming practices and distribution methods have posed significant challenges, leading to food insecurity issues in the country.

With a population of 241.5 million growing at a rate of 2.55% annually, Pakistan faces intensified food insecurity problems, evident from its 99th rank on the Global Hunger Index. The gap between population growth and food production has been widening, exacerbated by frequent floods that damage crops and result in shortages and price hikes.

The recent 2022 floods have severely impacted key crops like wheat, rice, fruits, and vegetables, underscoring the urgent need for long-term solutions such as building dams and enhancing irrigation systems. Embracing technological advancements in agriculture is crucial for Pakistan to improve productivity and efficiency in the sector.

While some countries are adopting innovative agricultural technologies like precision agriculture and vertical farming, Pakistan has been slow to follow suit due to a preference for traditional methods. Collaboration among the government, private sector, and research institutions is essential to drive agricultural innovation and ensure sustainability.

The involvement of middlemen, wholesalers, and retailers in the food distribution chain plays a significant role, often leading to price exploitation that burdens lower and middle-class citizens already grappling with inflation. To rejuvenate the agriculture sector and tackle food production challenges, Pakistan must invest in precision agriculture technology despite initial costs.

Efforts to increase yields, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency are crucial in combating food scarcity and high prices, ultimately safeguarding the well-being of the population. By focusing on agricultural transformation and implementing measures to regulate middlemen, Pakistan can progress towards a more secure and sustainable food system.
