Pakistan grapples with a 39.5% national poverty rate, with Balochistan at 70%. Urgent targeted interventions needed to address multidimensional poverty challenges.

Pakistan is facing a significant challenge with poverty, as the latest data reveals a national poverty rate of 39.5 percent. This rate varies across different provinces, with Balochistan having the highest poverty rate at 70 percent, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa at 48 percent, Sindh at 45 percent, and Punjab at 30 percent.

When comparing rural and urban areas, it becomes evident that rural regions bear a heavier burden, with a poverty rate of 51 percent, while urban areas fare better at 17 percent.

Research highlights the lack of essential facilities among a considerable portion of the population. Approximately 26.5 percent lack adequate living conditions, 49.4 percent lack educational resources, and 24.1 percent do not have access to proper healthcare.

The multidimensional poverty index, standing at 0.191, signifies that 19.1 percent of deprivations are experienced by impoverished individuals in Pakistan. Balochistan emerges as the province with the highest incidence of multidimensional poverty, affecting 70 percent of its population.

Despite some improvements in Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, Punjab stands out as the only province with a lower poverty rate than the national average. Punjab's poverty rate decreased slightly from 31.0 percent to 30.4 percent, while Sindh experienced an increase from 43.1 percent to 45.2 percent.

The data underscores the pressing need for targeted interventions to alleviate poverty in Pakistan, particularly in regions like Balochistan where the situation is most dire. Addressing multidimensional poverty requires a comprehensive approach that tackles issues related to education, healthcare, and living conditions. By focusing on these areas, Pakistan can work towards reducing poverty rates and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
