Commissioner Karachi directs proactive measures to protect citizens from the anticipated heatwave by installing cold water fountains, activating Heat Stroke centers, and coordinating with relevant authorities for emergency response.

Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has directed all Deputy Commissioners to adopt measures to protect citizens from the upcoming heatwave forecasted by the Meteorological Department. This decision was made during a meeting at the Commissioner’s office to assess preparations for the anticipated heatwave in the city.

To combat the expected heatwave, plans were put in place to install cold water fountains (Sabeels) throughout Karachi and activate Heat Stroke centers. Commissioner Karachi emphasized the importance of implementing emergency protocols to safeguard the public based on reports from the Met office, particularly in light of the tragic 2015 heatwave incident.

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz provided insights on the anticipated heatwave, highlighting the period from May 6 to 8 as critical. He advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and recommended the immediate activation of Heat Stroke centers to mitigate the impact of the extreme weather conditions.

The meeting concluded with directives for the Meteorological Department to issue a heatwave alert with preventive guidelines three days prior to the expected onset. Additionally, all city hospitals were instructed to prepare treatment facilities for potential heatwave victims. Commissioner Naqvi also urged K Electric to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the Heat Stroke centers for effective operations.

In anticipation of the heatwave, special arrangements will be made in KMC hospitals, JPMC, and Civil Hospital, including the establishment of dedicated wards for individuals affected by the heatwave.

Commissioner Karachi's proactive approach and coordination with relevant authorities demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Karachi's residents in the face of impending extreme weather conditions. By implementing these preventive measures and enhancing emergency response capabilities, the city aims to minimize the impact of the anticipated heatwave and protect vulnerable populations.
