Pakistan experiences a surge in maize exports, with TDAP and Punjab Agriculture Department collaborating to educate growers on production technology and export opportunities, aiming to enhance agricultural prosperity and trade competitiveness.

Pakistan has experienced a significant boost in maize exports, with figures soaring to $324 million from July 2023 to February 2024, marking a remarkable 195% increase compared to the previous year. Key markets for Pakistani maize include Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea, and Oman. To capitalize on this growth, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) has partnered with the Agriculture Department of Punjab to conduct awareness seminars on maize production and export opportunities in crucial maize-growing regions.

The first seminar took place in Okara and attracted around 160 participants, including growers, farmers, and agriculture extension officers from Okara and nearby districts. Punjab, responsible for 90.5% of maize production in Pakistan, serves as a vital area for spreading awareness about maize cultivation potential. The seminar featured speakers from the Punjab Agriculture Department, Maize and Millet Institute in Sahiwal, and trade and investment representatives from Vietnam and Korea.

The technical session covered topics such as Production Technology, Maize Production in Punjab, Yield Enhancement, and Unlocking Export Potential. Insights from the trade representatives shed light on export requirements and opportunities in Vietnam and Korea. Local farmers shared their challenges, while a Karachi-based exporter outlined maize export needs.

The seminar aimed to educate growers on international market dynamics, value addition strategies, and pre-and post-harvest procedures to maximize maize yields. The active involvement of Trade Attaches and experienced exporters is expected to drive adoption of new production technologies among Okara maize growers, leading to increased yields and export growth. This initiative underscores Pakistan's dedication to promoting agricultural prosperity and enhancing trade competitiveness.
