Authorities Battle Forest Fires in Margalla Hills

Authorities have successfully battled yet another forest fire that erupted in the Margalla Hills, adding to the challenges posed by the scorching heatwave prevailing in the country. This recent blaze comes on the heels of two earlier fires that were contained in different parts of the Margalla Hills. The Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad confirmed the re-ignition of the fire in a section of the Margalla Hills located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A swift response involving teams from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and 36 firefighters was mobilized to control the flames. A strategic firewall was established to prevent the fire from spreading into the federal capital, with collaborative efforts between the Islamabad administration and the KP government.

The Margalla Range, a segment of the Himalayan foothills, is no stranger to bushfires during the summer months, with sporadic fires occurring in the Islamabad hills. While the exact cause of these fires is still under investigation, three suspects have been apprehended on suspicion of starting the forest fires. In a separate incident, a fire broke out in the forest area of Baghar Sharif in Rawalpindi's Kahuta Tehsil, engulfing an estimated 15 to 20 acres. Rescue teams and law enforcement are actively engaged in containing the fire, facing difficulties due to the rugged terrain. The district administration has launched an emergency operation, calling for additional personnel and equipment to combat the blaze.

Meanwhile, a devastating fire that ravaged trees and wildlife erupted in the forest area of Kurd Sharif in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Karak district. Although the fire has been brought under control in Kurd Sharif, smoke continues to emanate from certain areas. Limited land access has impeded rescue operations, leading teams to be deployed via alternative routes. The cooling process is underway in areas where smoke lingers, as rescue personnel strive to fully extinguish the fire.

Parts of Pakistan have been experiencing record-breaking temperatures, with recent highs reaching up to 52.2 degrees Celsius (126 F). This extreme heat is part of a broader trend of hotter summers across South Asia, a phenomenon linked to human-induced climate change as highlighted by scientists.

The recurring forest fires in the Margalla Hills underscore the urgent need for enhanced preventive measures and greater public awareness regarding fire safety.
