FBR Launches Nationwide Non-Filers SIM Block Campaign

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken a significant step in its fight against tax evasion by introducing a nationwide non-filers SIM block campaign. This initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to enhance tax compliance across the country.

Under this new campaign, the SIM cards of individuals identified as non-filers with taxable income have been blocked with immediate effect. The blockage will remain in place until May 15, as per the directive issued by the FBR to telecom companies.

The target of this initiative is 506,671 individuals who have failed to file their tax returns for the year 2023 and are not listed in the Active Taxpayers List. Reversing the block on their mobile SIMs will not be a straightforward process, as any restoration requests will require approval from the FBR or the relevant commissioner.

This move is just the initial phase of the FBR's comprehensive plan to combat tax evasion. With data on over 2 million individuals already compiled, it is expected that more non-filers may face similar actions in the upcoming phases.

It is important to note that the FBR's authority extends beyond the non-filers SIM block. The board also holds the power to disconnect the electricity connections of non-filers, further strengthening enforcement measures to promote widespread tax compliance.
