A recent study by Heart File in Pakistan reveals concerning information about unregulated Smokeless Tobacco products, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations, taxes, and public awareness campaigns to address public health risks.

A recent study on Smokeless Tobacco (SLT) products in Pakistan has uncovered concerning information about the availability and regulation of these products in the market. The study, conducted by Heart File, highlighted the prevalence of unregulated SLTs such as Naswar, snuff, and Paan, which are known to contain high levels of cancer-causing Tobacco Nitrosamines (TSNAs).

The findings of the study pointed out widespread violations of WHO's FCTC articles related to tobacco use, labeling health warnings, taxes, content disclosure, and sale to minors. Naswar, the most common SLT in Pakistan, is used by an estimated 18 million people and is available in about 97% of stores surveyed across the country.

One of the key recommendations from the study is the urgent need for standardized packaging guidelines for all SLT products, including graphic health warnings and content disclosure. Additionally, the study emphasized the establishment of a content regulation framework for SLT products, especially due to the high levels of carcinogenic TSNAs found in Naswar.

The study also highlighted the absence of taxes on SLT products and proposed the introduction of taxes and price increases, including general sales tax and excise duty. Furthermore, it suggested implementing a comprehensive media campaign to raise public awareness about the risks associated with SLT use.

In conclusion, the study underscores the critical need for evidence-based policy regulations to address the issues surrounding SLT products in Pakistan. By enforcing stricter regulations, introducing taxes, and increasing public awareness, steps can be taken to mitigate the harmful effects of smokeless tobacco on public health.
