The Lahore High Court Chief Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad has raised alarm over the increasing threats and harassment faced by courts and their staff from state departments. This concern stems from a recent case involving alleged intimidation of a judge at a Sargodha anti-terrorism court by intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Chief Justice Ahmad took a strong stance against the obstruction of court procedures and the denial of citizens' constitutional rights by state entities. He summoned Punjab Inspector General of Police Usman Anwar and other officials to address a complaint regarding threats faced by District & Sessions Judge Muhammad Abbas, who reported being intimidated after refusing to meet with an ISI authority.

A special report submitted to the LHC registrar office detailed instances where police and state departments hindered judicial work, including attempts to transfer cases based on allegations of bias against judicial officers. The written order emphasized the state's obligation to safeguard and uphold the integrity of the courts, criticizing the Punjab police chief's unsatisfactory response to the judge's allegations against the ISI.

Incidents of intelligence agencies and jail authorities disrupting court proceedings by not producing accused individuals before the judge and limiting access for lawyers were condemned in the order. Contempt notices were issued against Sargodha district police officers, DSPs, CTD regional officers, and SHOs for their disrespectful behavior towards the judiciary.

The Lahore High Court's firm stance against threats and harassment towards the judiciary underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the independence of the courts. Chief Justice Ahmad's actions serve as a reminder of the crucial role played by the judiciary in ensuring justice and upholding citizens' rights in society.
