Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Statue Finds Permanent Home at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib

The statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the revered first Sikh ruler of Punjab, has found its permanent home at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib after a year-long stay. This significant event took place during an installation ceremony attended by Punjab's Minister for Minority Affairs and other officials, underscoring the importance of preserving the statue for Sikh pilgrims and tourists.

The bronze statue, weighing between 250 and 350 kg, portrays Maharaja Ranjit Singh mounted on his Arabian horse. Originally erected at Lahore's Shahi Qila in June 2019, the statue endured multiple acts of vandalism but was diligently restored before being relocated to Kartarpur Sahib for public admiration.

Currently, Sikh pilgrims from various nations are in Pakistan to honor the 185th anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's passing, with a special ceremony scheduled in Lahore. Ranjit Singh's legacy is characterized by his advocacy for religious harmony during his four-decade reign over Punjab, despite controversies surrounding his treatment of Mughal-era monuments.

The decision to move the statue to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib aims to offer a secure and convenient viewing experience for visitors utilizing the Kartarpur Corridor and beyond. Additionally, efforts are underway to restore Maharaja Ranjit Singh's samadhi in Lahore, reflecting the ongoing commitment to safeguard Sikh heritage in the region.
