Pakistan gears up for Ashura commemoration

Ashura, a significant day of remembrance, is observed annually on the 10th of Muharram in Pakistan. This solemn occasion is dedicated to honoring Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and the martyrs of Karbala. Tight security measures are put in place to ensure a peaceful commemoration of this event.

The day of Ashura symbolizes the unwavering courage of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the Prophet's (PBUH) grandson, his family, and loyal companions who valiantly defended Islam against adversity and oppression. Mourning processions are organized in cities and towns nationwide to pay tribute to the sacrifices made during the events of Karbala.

To facilitate the observance of Ashura, the federal government of Pakistan declares public holidays on Muharram 9 and 10. This year, Muharram 9 and 10 are expected to fall on July 16 and 17, which are Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

The Islamic month of Muharram, marking the beginning of the new Islamic year, is set to commence on July 8 in Pakistan. If the new moon is sighted on July 8, Youm-e-Ashur 2024 (Day of Ashura) will be observed on July 17 in the country.
