The Punjab government is set to address the controversial defamation bill in the Punjab Assembly session today, despite facing opposition from various quarters. The bill, officially known as 'The Punjab Defamation Bill,' has sparked discontent among both the Opposition and journalist representative bodies. The journalistic community has strongly opposed the bill, prompting the Press Gallery Committee of the Punjab Assembly to declare a boycott of the Assembly proceedings. A protest is also scheduled to occur at the Punjab Assembly premises in response to the proposed legislation.

Major journalist representative bodies, including APNS, CPNE, Punjab Assembly Press Gallery, PFUJ, and PUJ, gathered at the Lahore Press Club to denounce the bill and announce upcoming protests starting from Monday. Within the Punjab Assembly, the opposition has also voiced its dissent, calling for essential amendments to be made. Opposition leader Ahmad Khan Bhachar emphasized the need for thorough consultations with all stakeholders and civil society members before finalizing the bill.

Opposition MPA Rana Aftab Khan expressed concerns about the rushed nature of passing the bill and urged for comprehensive discussions with all stakeholders before its presentation in the house. Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has welcomed the opposition's input, inviting them to submit their recommendations and suggestions regarding the draft bill. He acknowledged the opposition's right to challenge the bill and encouraged them to voice their reservations before the bill undergoes debate and voting in the house.

On the government's side, Punjab Minister for Information Azma Zahid Bukhari clarified that the bill aims to combat the dissemination of fake news. She revealed plans to engage with representatives from all journalist unions, as directed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, before the assembly session commences.

The Punjab Defamation Bill has stirred significant controversy, with opposition from journalist bodies and political factions. The debate surrounding the bill highlights the importance of open dialogue and consultation in the legislative process.
