Red Cross Urges Global Action on Extreme Heat Threat

Recent studies have shown a concerning rise in extreme heat events worldwide, with experts attributing this trend to the effects of climate change. Scientists have analyzed data spanning from 1991 to 2020, identifying temperature thresholds in the top 10% for each country during that period. Their research, which examined temperatures leading up to May 15, 2024, revealed an average of 26 additional days of extreme heat globally due to human-induced climate change.

The year 2023 was recorded as the hottest year on record, with heatwaves impacting regions across the globe. Approximately 6.3 billion people, representing 80% of the world's population, endured at least 31 days of extreme heat in the past year. A total of 76 extreme heatwaves were documented in 90 countries, underscoring the widespread nature of this phenomenon.

The study highlighted stark differences in extreme heat occurrences with and without climate change influence. Countries like Suriname, Ecuador, and Panama would have experienced significantly fewer extreme heat days if not for the impact of climate change. The devastating consequences of extreme heat, including significant loss of human lives, have been observed globally.

While flooding and hurricanes often dominate headlines, the lethal impacts of extreme heat are equally severe. Jagan Chapagain, the secretary general of the International Federation of the Red Cross, has emphasized the urgent need to address the escalating threat posed by extreme heat events on a global scale.
