The Islamabad High Court dismisses a petition against Imran Khan, sparking legal debate over alleged external interference and differing judicial opinions in high-profile cases.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) recently made a decision regarding a petition aimed at disqualifying former Prime Minister Imran Khan over allegations of concealing his supposed daughter, Tyrian White. The three-member bench, consisting of Justices Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Arbab Mohammad Tahir, and Saman Rafat Imtiaz, reviewed the petition after almost a year. The decision was based on a previous dismissal by a three-judge panel, which took place on May 10, 2023. At that time, two of the three judges supported the dismissal, while the IHC Chief Justice found the petition valid. However, the majority opinion was briefly posted on the IHC website but later removed, leading to the dissolution of the bench.

During the recent hearing, Justice Jahangiri referenced the previous judges' opinion and concluded that the case had already been dismissed. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party welcomed the decision, stating that the case had been resolved by the two judges and criticized the IHC Chief Justice for prolonging the matter on technical grounds. Some senior lawyers raised concerns about the bench not addressing the case's substance and highlighted the contradictory aspects of the verdict.

Despite the case being on hold for nearly a year, it remained controversial, especially after six IHC judges accused intelligence agencies of interference in a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council, indirectly referencing this particular case. The legal community expressed surprise at the handling of the case and the reliance on the previous judges' opinion by the new bench.

The recent decision by the Islamabad High Court regarding the petition against Imran Khan has stirred debate and raised questions within the legal community. While the case has been dismissed based on previous judgments, the controversy surrounding it and the allegations of external interference continue to linger. The intricacies of the legal process and the differing opinions among judges highlight the complexities of such high-profile cases in Pakistan's judicial system.
