Saudi Arabia's MWAN implements innovative waste management solutions during Hajj, educating pilgrims and service providers for a cleaner, sustainable environment.

Saudi Arabia's National Center for Waste Management, MWAN, has taken significant steps to maintain a clean and healthy environment for pilgrims during the annual Hajj season. These initiatives are designed to improve waste management practices and preserve natural resources for future generations.

One of the key initiatives introduced by MWAN is the implementation of a machine that transforms food waste into fertilizer. This innovative approach allows for the recycling of food waste without producing any unpleasant odors or harmful emissions, ensuring a sustainable process within the sacred sites.

Furthermore, the 'Sustainable Ihram' program plays a crucial role in educating pilgrims about the importance of recycling and environmental conservation. The program focuses on collecting and sorting textile waste, such as ihrams, pillows, blankets, and mattresses, from pilgrims. These items are then recycled and redistributed, with designated collection points set up in Mina camps and hotels in Makkah for pilgrims to contribute their clothing.

With an estimated collection of around 50 tonnes of ihrams and over 300,000 pillows through collaboration with relevant authorities, MWAN is actively working to reduce textile waste during the Hajj season.

To address the significant amount of waste generated from slaughterhouse carcasses, which is projected to exceed 12,000 tonnes this year, dedicated teams will oversee the safe disposal process starting on the first day of Eid Al-Adha. Additionally, efforts are being made to educate Hajj service providers on proper waste management practices.

As part of these initiatives, MWAN has conducted training courses on sustainable waste management for 121 service providers to enhance their skills and promote waste reduction. The focus is on encouraging the use of environmentally friendly materials to minimize pollution and protect the environment. A monitoring and inspection team has also been actively involved in improving operational efficiency by conducting tours and visiting over 100 facilities.

The efforts undertaken by MWAN to enhance waste management practices during the Hajj season are commendable. By implementing innovative solutions and educating both pilgrims and service providers, Saudi Arabia is making significant strides towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment. These initiatives not only benefit the current generation of pilgrims but also contribute to the long-term conservation of natural resources for future pilgrimages.
