Pakistan has seen a decline in train accidents over the years, with a focus on improving safety measures and accountability to prevent incidents. Efforts include disciplinary actions for negligence and addressing issues at unmanned level crossings.

Over the past five years, Pakistan has witnessed a total of 537 train accidents, out of which 313 resulted in loss of life or serious injuries. However, there has been a positive trend with a decrease in the number of train accidents over the last four years. Investigations have been carried out for all railway accidents to prevent future incidents, focusing on improving management at various levels including the Federal Government Inspector.

Pakistan Railways has operated around 2,03,717 trains in the last five years, averaging approximately 40,750 trains per year, with an average of 107 accidents annually. The railway system has implemented various measures to mitigate accidents, provide relief, and conduct inquiries to ensure safety and accountability.

Looking at the distribution of accidents, there were 159 accidents in 2019, 145 in 2020, 87 in 2021, 62 in 2022, and a slight increase to 84 accidents in 2023. Analysis reveals that 32% of accidents occur at unmanned level crossings, mainly due to the negligence of road users.

During this period, a total of 259 employees were held accountable for negligence and were appropriately disciplined according to the Efficiency and Discipline Rules of the government of Pakistan.

While the number of train accidents in Pakistan has shown a downward trend in recent years, there is still room for improvement in ensuring the safety of railway operations. It is crucial for all stakeholders, including railway authorities, employees, and road users, to work together to prevent accidents and prioritize safety measures. By implementing stricter regulations and increasing awareness about railway safety, we can strive towards a safer and more efficient railway system in Pakistan.
