Sindh Government Warns KE Over Heatwave Deaths

Karachi, the bustling metropolis of Pakistan, is currently in the grip of a severe heatwave, leading to a tragic surge in fatalities across the city. The soaring temperatures, with the mercury touching 42°C and a 'feels-like' temperature surpassing 50°C, have resulted in 22 reported deaths. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted continued hot and humid weather in the coming days, exacerbating the challenges faced by Karachi's residents.

The Sindh government has issued a stern warning to K-Electric (KE), the city's power utility provider, in response to the recent deaths. If power outages are identified as the cause of these fatalities, the government has threatened to file murder cases against the responsible individuals at KE. Home Minister of Sindh, Ziaul Hasan Lanjar, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and has assured that an investigation is underway to determine the underlying reasons behind these tragic incidents.

Despite the escalating heatstroke cases, KE has defended its stance by highlighting that 70% of its network remains free from load shedding. The company has explained that the load shedding schedule is adjusted periodically based on losses in specific areas, with regions experiencing lower losses receiving fewer power cuts. Conversely, areas plagued by electricity theft or unpaid bills face increased load shedding, contributing to the power woes in Karachi.

This clash between the Sindh government and KE is not new, as similar tensions surfaced last month over power cuts in the city. Energy Minister of Sindh, Nasir Hussain Shah, had also issued a warning of legal action against KE in case of heatstroke-related deaths. The situation in Karachi remains critical, with a significant influx of heatstroke patients being admitted to hospitals.

As Karachi battles the dual challenges of extreme weather conditions and prolonged power outages, it is imperative for authorities to work swiftly to mitigate the impact on residents and prevent further loss of life.
