The Avicenna Medical College controversy leads to UHS mandating Student Counselling Cells in Punjab to address student grievances and ensure safety in medical education.

The Avicenna Medical College in Lahore is facing a wave of controversy following the tragic death of a female student, Mahnoor Nadeem. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing. Additionally, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) has taken a proactive stance in response to serious complaints from students regarding fines, harassment, torture, and physical punishments.

UHS has mandated all affiliated public and private medical colleges in Punjab to establish Students Counselling Cells (SCCs) comprising senior faculty members, including those from psychiatry departments, and student representatives. These cells are tasked with addressing issues of harassment and other grievances to prevent incidents similar to the one at Avicenna Medical College. The decision was made during a meeting led by UHS Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore, convened in the wake of Mahnoor Nadeem's untimely demise and subsequent student protests.

The move towards establishing SCCs reflects a commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of students within the medical education system. By providing a platform for addressing concerns and fostering a supportive environment, educational institutions aim to uphold standards of professionalism and respect.
