Parts of Sindh, Pakistan, face a severe heatwave with temperatures exceeding 50°C, leading to health concerns, power shortages, and school closures. Relief efforts are ongoing to support affected communities.

Parts of Sindh, Pakistan, are currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above normal levels. Moenjodaro, a city in Sindh, recorded the highest temperature in the country at a scorching 51°C. Cities like Karachi, Dadu, and Jacobabad have also been affected, with temperatures well above the usual averages.

Today, Karachi saw temperatures reaching 37°C, which is two degrees higher than the typical summer temperature. Dadu and Moenjodaro faced the brunt of the heat, recording temperatures as high as 49.5°C, four to five degrees above normal.

As a result of the extreme heat, hospitals in Jacobabad have been inundated with patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, with temperatures hitting a staggering 50°C. To assist those affected, over a thousand relief camps have been set up across Sindh.

The Chief Meteorologist has warned that the heatwave is expected to persist until the first week of June, with more extreme temperatures anticipated. Unfortunately, the heatwave has also led to power shortages in some areas, with up to 15 hours of load shedding per day.

Due to the extreme conditions, schools in Sindh and Punjab have postponed exams and closed early. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has issued warnings about severe heat in southern districts. Efforts are underway to educate citizens about the risks of heatwaves through media campaigns.

The current heatwave in Sindh, Pakistan, is a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events, exacerbated by climate change. It is crucial for communities to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and support one another during such challenging times.
