IMD issues heatwave alerts for multiple Indian states

As per the latest forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several Indian states are bracing for severe heatwaves in the upcoming days. Maximum temperatures are predicted to soar above 45 degrees Celsius, particularly affecting regions like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. The IMD has sounded alarms for the period from May 18 to 21, cautioning residents to prepare for intense heatwave conditions.

The IMD's warnings extend to eastern and central India, with a new heatwave spell anticipated to commence this weekend. A red alert has been issued for west Rajasthan, urging extreme caution, especially for vulnerable individuals. Moreover, an orange alert has been raised for other states, emphasizing the heightened health risks for susceptible populations.

For a heatwave to be officially recognized, specific temperature thresholds must be surpassed, taking deviations from normal temperatures into consideration. Alongside heatwave alerts, the IMD has also shared rainfall predictions, signaling anticipated rainfall activity in various districts of Kerala between May 18 and 20.

Looking ahead, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu until May 20. Fishermen in certain areas have been advised by the IMD to refrain from venturing into the sea during this period to ensure their safety.

Adding to the weather dynamics, the IMD has indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to progress into specific regions by approximately May 19. The overall weather outlook suggests a combination of severe heatwaves and potential rainfall across different parts of India in the days ahead.
