PDMA Issues Heat Wave Guidelines for Punjab Region

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has recently issued guidelines to tackle the looming threat of a heat wave in the region. The Director-General of PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, has emphasized the importance of preparedness and vigilance among the district administration to handle any potential emergency situations. A severe heat wave is forecasted to hit Punjab from May 21 to 27, with a particular focus on major cities and districts in South Punjab.

Following the directives of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, proactive measures are being put in place to minimize the impact of the impending heat wave. District Commissioners have been assigned the responsibility of ensuring the availability of heat wave prevention facilities in public spaces. Public awareness initiatives will be rolled out through various channels such as helplines, mosque announcements, and signage at bus stands and railway stations.

To educate the public about the risks associated with heat waves, information will be disseminated through multiple media platforms. Farmers will receive guidance on safeguarding their crops from the adverse effects of heat waves. Veterinary care centers will operate 24/7, and the Health department has been directed to cancel leaves for medical staff, establish heatwave counters in hospitals, and maintain an adequate supply of essential first aid medications.

Mobile health units will be strategically stationed in public areas and medical campuses on a permanent basis. The education department will install heat wave prevention signs at school entrances, adjust school timings, and grant holidays to children under the age of 5. Citizens are advised to limit unnecessary travel during urban heat waves, wear light-colored clothing, protect their heads from direct sunlight, and stay well-hydrated.

Special consideration should be given to the elderly, individuals with existing health conditions, and those with heart ailments to prevent heat-related health complications. By adhering to these precautionary measures, the adverse effects of heat waves can be significantly reduced.

It is crucial for the residents of Punjab to heed the warnings and recommendations provided by the PDMA and other relevant authorities to safeguard themselves and their communities from the potential dangers of the upcoming heat wave.
