Climate change is a pressing issue that is affecting countries worldwide, including Pakistan. The rise in greenhouse gas emissions has led to a global temperature increase of 0.74°C, resulting in severe climate changes and natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, famines, and droughts. These events have caused habitat degradation, deforestation, disruptions in ecosystems, species extinction, and changes in animal migration patterns.

Pakistan, despite contributing minimally to global emissions, is facing significant repercussions from global warming. The shifting climate is endangering biodiversity, leading to habitat degradation and threatening numerous species. The country has experienced a rise in natural disasters like floods and droughts, which not only displace communities but also strain infrastructure.

Ranked as the 8th most vulnerable nation to climate change, Pakistan incurs an annual cost of $14 billion, equivalent to five percent of its GDP. Climate variability has dire consequences for food security, resulting in widespread malnutrition and food shortages nationwide. The country faces an annual median probability of severe drought, with forecasts indicating a heightened risk of meteorological drought across all emissions scenarios.

To address these challenges, the Ministry of Climate Change in Pakistan, established in 2019, aims to enhance energy conservation and optimize fuel mix usage. It is crucial to implement policies to mitigate floods and droughts, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adopt adaptation and mitigation strategies. Investing in climate-resilient agriculture, water conservation measures, and renewable energy sources is essential for sustainable development.
