The Pakistan Meteorological Department warns of climate change impact as heatwave sweeps across the country. Rising global temperatures and rapid urbanization exacerbate the effects, prompting government measures to protect the population.

The ongoing extreme weather conditions in Pakistan have been linked to climate change by the Director General of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Mahr Sahibzad Khan. According to Khan, the current heatwave sweeping across the country is a result of various meteorological, climatological, and environmental factors.

The primary cause of the heatwave is the meteorological conditions that support high temperatures, such as the presence of a high-pressure system, clear skies, and limited cloud cover that trap heat near the earth's surface. Khan emphasized that climate change is leading to an increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwaves globally, including in Pakistan.

Rising global temperatures, driven by greenhouse gas emissions and other human activities, are contributing to more frequent extreme heat events like heatwaves. Rapid urbanization in major cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi is also exacerbating the situation by leading to higher temperatures.

To address the impact of heatwaves and protect the population, Khan highlighted the importance of climate change mitigation, urban planning strategies, and adaptation measures. The government has taken steps to issue advisories, set up cooling centers in urban areas, and ensure adequate supplies of electricity and water.

As Pakistan braces for the upcoming monsoon rains, the PMD is closely monitoring weather patterns indicating increased rainfall. While the intensity of the rains is still being analyzed, the PMD advises citizens to stay hydrated, keep cool, limit outdoor activities, and take necessary precautions to cope with the heatwave.

Areas expected to be most affected by the heatwave include Thal, Sahiwal, Okara, Bhakkar, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan, Sibbi, Larkana, Sukkur, Dadu, Jacobabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad. Urban areas are also likely to feel the effects of the heatwave.

Climate change is a global issue that is impacting countries like Pakistan with extreme weather events like heatwaves. It is crucial for governments, communities, and individuals to work together to mitigate the effects of climate change, implement sustainable practices, and adapt to changing environmental conditions to ensure a safer and healthier future for all.
