The Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa issues a flood alert due to glacier melting, prompting proactive measures to safeguard communities from potential natural disasters.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has issued a flood alert following the melting of glaciers in several districts. The alert, prompted by the worsening flood situation, affects nine districts including Chitral Upper, Chitral Lower, Swat, Dir Upper, Dir Lower, Kohistan Upper, Kohistan Lower, Mansehra, and Kurram.

Director General of PDMA, Muhammad Qaiser Khan, emphasized the importance of monitoring the situation closely. District administrations and relevant departments have been instructed to keep a close eye on developments and to promptly inform and relocate local populations to safe areas if necessary to prevent loss of life and property.

Failure to implement timely safety measures could lead to significant human and material losses due to the anticipated flood situation. The PDMA control room is operational, and the public is encouraged to report any emergencies by dialing 1700.

Additionally, a weather system is expected to impact Pakistan from April 23 to April 29, prompting nationwide instructions to relevant departments to prepare for potential challenges.

The flood alert in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks posed by climate change-induced events such as glacier melting. The proactive measures taken by the PDMA and other authorities are crucial in mitigating the impact of natural disasters and safeguarding communities from harm.
