Saudi Government Issues Heat Warning for Haj Pilgrims

The Saudi government has alerted pilgrims participating in the annual Haj pilgrimage to prepare for scorching temperatures reaching an average of 44 degrees Celsius. This cautionary measure follows a significant number of heat-related illnesses reported during last year's pilgrimage. The head of meteorology stressed the critical need for ensuring a sufficient water supply to meet the escalating daily consumption demands as temperatures soar.

Each year, millions of Muslims from around the world travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the Haj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam. The pilgrimage involves several days of rituals, including circling the Kaaba in Mecca and performing prayers at Mount Arafat. However, the extreme heat in the region poses a significant health risk to pilgrims, especially those coming from cooler climates.

To mitigate the risks associated with the soaring temperatures, the Saudi government has advised pilgrims to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Additionally, pilgrims are encouraged to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and to wear loose, light-colored clothing to help regulate body temperature.
