Deputy Commissioner in Rawalpindi leads efforts to enforce new regulations targeting single-use plastics, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to sustainable alternatives.

In a significant move towards environmental conservation, a crucial meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Office in Rawalpindi, bringing together key figures from the plastic industry. Led by Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema, the gathering included manufacturers, recyclers, and consumers. The focus of the meeting was on the implementation of the Punjab Environmental Protection Regulations 2023, specifically targeting single-use plastic products in District Rawalpindi.

During the meeting, Anza Niazi, the Assistant Director of Environment, presented a detailed overview of the new regulations, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to alternative materials to reduce reliance on single-use plastics. The Deputy Commissioner issued a stern directive to all stakeholders, stressing the need for strict compliance to avoid legal consequences.

To ensure adherence to the regulations, price control magistrates will be equipped with tools to measure the thickness of plastic bags, with those below 75 microns facing confiscation starting June 5. Stakeholders were encouraged to explore sustainable alternatives such as cloth bags, paper products, steel, or wooden utensils, highlighting the dual benefits of protecting the environment and public health.

This proactive approach by Rawalpindi showcases a commitment to environmental sustainability and serves as a model for the region in the fight against plastic pollution.
