Shah Maqsood and Mahbuba, a retired Afghan couple, face financial challenges while selling street food in Kabul. Their story highlights pension delays and the rise of small businesses for survival in Afghanistan.

Shah Maqsood, a retired Ministry of Defense officer, and his wife Mahbuba, a former University of Kabul employee, have been selling street food in Kabul's PD15 for seven months to make ends meet. The couple, facing economic hardships, are seeking their retirement pensions.

Shah Maqsood, 67, with almost four decades of service in various Ministry of Defense departments, resorted to selling bolani during the past winter due to financial difficulties and pension delays. The couple's food cart received a generous donation of 50,000 Afs (approximately $700) from an anonymous benefactor, enabling them to establish a booth.

Despite their efforts to expand the business, the income generated is insufficient to sustain their livelihood. Shah Maqsood emphasized the importance of receiving their rightful pensions, as it has been years since they last received them. Mahbuba expressed gratitude for the government's permission to operate the booth, which was also constructed by an unnamed donor.

In a country grappling with rising poverty and unemployment, more individuals are turning to small-scale ventures for income. Shah Maqsood, earning around 400 Afs (about $5) daily from bolani sales, appeals to organizations supporting small businesses to aid in the growth of his enterprise.

The story of Shah Maqsood and Mahbuba sheds light on the challenges faced by retired individuals in Afghanistan and the growing trend of small businesses as a means of survival. Their perseverance and determination to overcome financial obstacles serve as an inspiration to many. It is crucial for authorities to address pension delays and support initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods for all citizens.
