Street crime in Islamabad surges, with over Rs1 billion lost in cash and valuables. Capital Police struggle to curb rising crime rates, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures and effective crime prevention strategies.

Street crime has become a significant issue in the federal capital during the first four months of this year, resulting in the loss of cash and valuables exceeding Rs1 billion. The surge in street crime, which includes armed robberies, house burglaries, and vehicle thefts, has raised serious concerns among residents. From January to April, a total of 8,093 cases were reported, with the Capital Police managing to recover stolen goods worth over Rs240 million.

The data reveals that Khanna police station topped the list with 687 theft cases, followed by Shahzad Town police station with 515 cases and Aabpara police station with 500 cases. These incidents involved 12,159 individuals, out of which only 5,796 arrests have been made, leaving 6,363 suspects still on the loose. The police's success rate in apprehending culprits stands at approximately 47%, indicating the need for enhanced security measures to safeguard the capital's residents.

Despite attempts to gather insights from the police, no response was received by The Express Tribune. The escalating trend of street crime underscores the urgency for improved security protocols and more effective crime prevention strategies in Islamabad.
