The Pakistan Meteorological Department warns of prolonged heatwaves in Lahore and Punjab, with temperatures expected to soar 06-08°C above normal levels. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and seek shelter in well-ventilated spaces to mitigate the effects of the extreme heat.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast indicating that heatwaves are expected to persist in Lahore and most parts of Punjab until May 27. Temperatures are projected to be 06 to 08°C above normal levels, posing a significant risk to residents in the region.

The prevailing synoptic situation, characterized by the presence of continental air over Pakistan and high pressure in the upper atmosphere, is likely to continue throughout the week. These weather conditions will contribute to the prolonged heatwaves in Lahore and Punjab, leading to temperatures surpassing the usual range.

In the Potohar region, daytime temperatures are anticipated to be 04 to 06°C higher than normal. Lahore specifically is bracing for scorching weather, with maximum temperatures expected to reach between 45-47°C on Thursday and Friday.

Recent observations have shown that hot and dry conditions have prevailed in Lahore and other parts of the province, with temperatures soaring 04-06°C above average. Notably, Noorpur Thal and Khairpur recorded the highest temperatures in the province, hitting 48°C. Other areas such as Rahim Yar Khan, Bawalnagar, Kot Addu, and Bhakkar experienced temperatures of 47°C, while Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan registered 46°C, and Sahiwal, Multan, and Sargodha reached 45°C. In Lahore, the maximum temperature recorded was 44°C, with an evening relative humidity of 21 per cent.

As Lahore and Punjab continue to grapple with intense heatwaves, it is crucial for residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool during this period. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and seeking shelter in well-ventilated spaces are essential measures to mitigate the effects of the extreme heat. It is advisable to follow the weather updates provided by the Pakistan Meteorological Department and adhere to any guidelines issued to ensure the well-being of individuals in the affected areas.
