Nangarhar Province Battles Rising Malaria Cases

Local authorities in Nangarhar province have reported a concerning increase in malaria cases compared to previous years. Over the initial five months of this year, around 15,000 individuals sought treatment for malaria, marking a significant rise from the 9,500 cases recorded during the same period in 2023.

Mohammad Saeed Shirzad, who oversees the malaria and communicable diseases program in the province, highlighted ongoing efforts such as the regular distribution of mosquito nets to households every three years and the availability of diagnostic tools and medications in all hospitals.

Residents of Nangarhar stress the importance of public awareness campaigns and necessary resources to combat malaria. Nematullah emphasized the need for educational initiatives to empower individuals in protecting themselves and eradicating malaria from the region.

Shah Wali Khan echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the significance of providing mosquito nets, eliminating stagnant water sources, and conducting insecticide spraying in the hot climate of Nangarhar. Health officials attribute the rise in malaria cases to factors like geographical location, climate changes, recent rainfall, and the influx of migrants from Pakistan.

The spike in malaria cases in Nangarhar underscores the critical need for proactive measures to control and prevent the spread of this disease.
